Distinguished and Famous people from Latrobe Region

🌟 Darrel Baldock

Darrel “Doc” Baldock’s Latrobe association ran well beyond a brief stop on the way to the VFL. He played for the club before joining St Kilda, then returned and helped Latrobe win four successive premierships from 1969 to 1972. In between, he captained St Kilda to its 1966 premiership and earned All-Australian recognition. The AFL’s record lists 158 games for Latrobe across his two periods there. His story therefore joins local and national football rather than treating a regional club merely as the place a future star departed.

🌟 David Foster

David Foster built an international reputation in competitive woodchopping and became closely associated with Latrobe’s Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame at Bells Parade. Born in Hobart, he competed across Australia and overseas and captained the Australian team for 21 consecutive years. The University of Tasmania’s historical account records a remarkable collection of world and national titles. His work promoting the sport’s heritage forms another chapter in Latrobe’s woodchopping tradition. Woodchopping combines technique, timing and strength, and Foster’s career helped bring that specialised sporting world to a wider public.

⚖️ Frank Neasey

Frank Neasey was born at Latrobe in 1920 and began his working life as a teacher. After wartime service he used the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme to study law, eventually joining Tasmania’s Supreme Court in 1963. He supported clearer legal language, more accurate court records and other reforms intended to improve how justice worked. Biography also interested him: his study of Andrew Inglis Clark was completed by his son after his death. Latrobe is his birthplace, preceding the classrooms, legal practice and twenty-seven years on the bench that shaped his contribution to Tasmanian public life.
